What’s the difference between shading and blending?
With that being said, shading is much easier. You simply need to put down each color and that’s it. Blending takes much more time and while mistakes are less visible and there is much more freedom to do what you like, it takes far more practice to perfect blending as opposed to shading. They are not separate entities.

Smooth Surface Paper
- Use a soft grade pencil – 2B and softer.
- Create desired shade.
- Use Stump Technique (smudging) to create even shade. Variation: On a scrap piece of paper apply soft pencil until shade is black. Rub finger, cloth or stump into the black shade.

When executed correctly, shading can make a drawing appear three dimensional and create a convincing image. When rendering a drawing that communicates volume, shading is absolutely critical.
